tND Retail - Jan-Willem Boerhout

Retail is selling things that do not return, to people that do.

Retail and IT, from someone who knows both from the inside.

Why tND Retail

Customers expect everything to add up.

At its core, retail hasn't changed. It is still about selling things that do not return, to people that do.

What has changed are the expectations. The same price, the same stock and the same story, online and in store. That only works when your systems and your data are in order.

That's easier said than done. POS, webshop, ERP, PIM, apps and marketplaces all need to talk to each other. Product data needs to be captured right once and be the same everywhere. And meanwhile, every vendor promises that AI will solve everything.

That's where I come in. As a retailer's son I literally grew up in a store, and I know IT from the inside. I speak the language of the shop floor and the language of the IT department, and I translate between the two.

I look at your business and your customers first, and only then at the technology. That way you avoid investing in systems nobody needs. Or as my father, a retailer himself, put it:

The expensive things are the ones you never use.

What I do

Technology is never the goal. Results are.

  1. ITEM 01

    CIO as a Service

An experienced CIO at the table, without a full-time hire. Part-time and flexible: I set the IT strategy, steer the IT organisation and suppliers, and act as a sparring partner for the board. So you have a CIO on demand, scaling up or down as your needs change. Also available as interim CIO.

  2. ITEM 02

    IT strategy and architecture

An IT strategy that fits your business strategy, with steps you can actually take. I use my own Lucky Clover model to get there.

  3. ITEM 03

    Master Data Management

Product data, supplier data, customer data: if it's wrong, everything is wrong. I help you set up ownership, agreements and processes, so data is captured right once and is the same everywhere.

  4. ITEM 04

    Data and Business Intelligence

From data to decisions. I make sure the right information reaches the people who need to act on it.

  5. ITEM 05

    AI in retail

What can AI do today for your stores, your customer service or your team? I show you what works, what doesn't (yet), and how to get started in a practical way.

  6. ITEM 06

    Second opinion

An IT proposal or software selection on the table? I check whether it really solves your problem, whether the timeline is realistic, where the pitfalls are and whether the price is right.

How I work

Practical.

No thick reports, but clear choices.

Independent.

I have no stake in any supplier or software package. My advice is about what's right for you.

I get things done.

A plan is only finished when it works and your people can work with it.

About me

Jan-Willem Boerhout

Founder of tND Retail

I'm a retailer's son and studied business economics, with marketing as my core subject. I taught myself IT on the job.

Over forty years I built up experience in data, IT and store automation: in market research and data analysis at ACNielsen, as a data warehouse consultant at BSO/Origin and as Store Automation Director at NCR.

With tND Retail I work for national and international retailers and brands, such as Marie-Stella-Maris, where I'm CIO through CIO as a Service. In 2014 I won the CIO of the Year award (IT Hero) for my work as CIO at Rituals.

People describe me as experienced, hands-on, down to earth and with a sense of humour. I like to bring that last one to every project.
